Motivation

Introducing cross-sensory interaction

Human–Computer Interaction has long explored multimodal and multisensory interfaces, yet recent work increasingly shows that senses do not operate independently. Perception in one modality can reshape how we experience another.

This workshop introduces cross-sensory interaction as a focused lens for HCI: interaction design that deliberately leverages crossmodal cognition and neuroplasticity to rewire perception. Rather than adding more modalities, we ask how sensory signals interact, interfere, substitute, or enhance one another—and what this means for theory, design, engineering, and inclusion.

Our goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners to clarify this emerging space, surface shared challenges, and collaboratively define future directions for sensory research in HCI.
